Twenty-Nine

Taggart died days before Price found out the truth about what happened to Terminus. She was in her Langley office when she got a phone call from the new director.

“My condolences,” Tom Fowler said. “I know you and Director Taggart were close.”

“He was very sick,” Price said. “I’m just glad he’s no longer suffering.”

“Of course,” Fowler said. “He’s in a better place. But life must go on. I need you to come to my office. There’s some last bit of business that needs to be attended to concerning the old Director and the Terminus division.”

Price went to his office and sat down across from the sneering and condescending Fowler. He was on the phone, barking orders at some station chief or clandestine officer.

“Keep looking,” he snapped. “We’ve got eyes all over the damn place. I want it cleaned up. What a god damn mess!”

He slammed his phone down and turned to Price. “Thanks for coming,” he said.

“What is this about?” Price asked.

“Director Taggart recommended my promotion to the President,” he said. “I know many in the agency believed you were next in line.”

“Well, things change…” Price said. “You know what happened. Don’t play coy with me. You know Director Taggart removed me from Terminus before his death. You know he shut the whole operation down.”

Fowler chuckled. “Of course,” he said. “And in a way, that’s why I called you here. I wanted to update you about the division, and I need your assistance to help take care of a loose end.”

“Go on.”

“Your Terminus Division has been canceled.”

“Taggart had made that clear enough in his hospital room.”

“The officers have been relieved.”

“They weren’t reassigned?”

“No,” Fowler said. “They were…” He paused and stared directly at Price. “They were relieved.”

Price’s eyes widened. “They’re dead.”

“There was an explosion at Camp Solitude,” Fowler said. “We’ve verified everything. Your experiments are gone.”

Price hung her head. She wanted to cry.

Fowler seemed to enjoy telling her the news. “The one that killed the senator, his DNA wasn’t at the site. Do you know where he is?”

“I don’t know a damn thing,” she answered.

“You were the wrangler,” Fowler said. “I figured you would know something.”

“He ran,” she said. “He stopped taking orders from us.”

“I can tell by the look on your face that you’re upset. This is the CIA, Officer Price. We clean up our messes. Now, what was his name, the one that got away?”

“Jason Drake.”

“If he contacts you, you’re to let me know immediately. Understand?”

She nodded.

“Good,” he said. “Things are going to run a little different around here now that I am in charge. Taggart trusted the people. I won’t let what happened to him happen to me.”

“You’re dismissed, Kate.”

Price left the new director’s office and made her way back to her office. She could feel the eyes of the other officers and analysts in Langley watch her from behind their desks. She was now a pariah, an untouchable. Her career was essentially over. She stared at her computer screen. She was trying to come to terms with it all.
